Walter H. Grondeski, known affectionately as Walt by his friends and family, passed away peacefully of natural causes on March 22, 2025, in Middleburg Heights, Ohio. Born on July 11, 1919, in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, Walt's life was a dedication of service that spanned more than a century.
Walt was raised by his parents, Ignatz and Mary Grondeski, alongside his siblings, Edward, Stanley, Cecilia, Emily, Dorothy, and Lucille. After graduating from Windham High School in 1937, he answered the call of duty and served his country in the United States Army.
Following his military service, Walt embarked on a career with Republic Steel, where he devoted 44 years. His work ethic earned him the respect and friendship of those he worked alongside.
He was preceded in death by his beloved first wife, Margaret, his beloved second wife, Annie, and his daughters, Bonita Ditchy and Maryanna Williams. His parents, Ignatz and Mary, as well as his brothers, Edward and Stanley, and sisters, Cecilia, Emily, and Dorothy, also predeceased him.
He is survived by his sister, Lucille Young, who, along with four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews, will carry forward his legacy. Walt's memory will also be cherished by the many others he loved.
Walt's garden was a source of joy, a testament to his patience and nurturing spirit. Hunting and fishing provided him not only with moments of tranquility but also with stories to share with friends and family. An avid sports fan, Walt could often be found offering commentary from his favorite armchair, his insights and enthusiasm making every game more exciting.
As we say goodbye to this remarkable man, we also celebrate the countless moments of laughter, guidance, and tenderness that he shared so generously.
Walt Grondeski's story is one of a life well-lived and well-loved. As we mourn his passing, we also take comfort in knowing that his legacy will live on in the hearts and memories of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. Farewell, Walt—you will be dearly missed, but never forgotten.
Family will receive friends on Friday, March 28, 2025 at St. Mary & St. Joseph Parish in Newton Falls, Ohio from 10:00-11:00 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. with the Very Rev. David Merzweiler, V.F. as celebrant.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, tributes may be sent to St. Joseph Church, Newton Falls.
