Stephen F. Ledger, 81, of Mogadore, Ohio passed away December 18, 2021 at the Justin T. Rogers Hospice Care Center in Akron. Steve was born on April 30, 1940. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Anna Matusz Ledger of Newton Falls. He is survived by his daughters Lisa Marie of Duluth, GA and Tara Michele of West Palm Beach, FL, 3 grandchildren and 1 great grandson. Also surviving is his sister, Sandra Ledger Semon of Warren and his former wife, Mary Ann, several nieces and nephews.
Steve was a graduate of Newton Falls High School, Kent State University, earning a BS degree in Education. He also earned a Master’s Degree from Temple University where he continued with postgraduate studies in biology. In high school, Steve was active and lettered in varsity sports, especially basketball and football. While at Kent State he was a member of Theta Chi fraternity, the Pershing Rifle Drill Team and the Scabbard and Blade Military Honor Society. Upon graduation from Kent State in 1963, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the US Army Infantry. Steve served honorably as a Company Commander at Fort Dix, NJ where he trained troops for Vietnam, and was promoted to Chief of Security, G2 and General Staff. Steve was honorably discharged and promoted to Captain in 1975.
After leaving the military he taught high school biology and coached football in both Ohio and NJ. Steve also held teaching positions at Glouster College, NJ and Kent State University.
On a sabbatical from teaching, Steve accepted the position of field manager for Goodyear International Corporation on their rubber plantation, “Pathfinder”, in Kabasalan, Zamboanga del Sur, Mindanao, Philippine Islands.
Steve was a life member of the American Legion and always active in community events. He was a devout Catholic and after retirement, honored veterans with flags and poppies.
Visitation will be held Thursday, December 23 at noon at the Bernard P. Borowski Memorial Home, Newton Falls where services will follow at 1 PM.
