Raymond George Custer Obituary
Raymond George Custer, a cherished husband, father, and veteran, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2025, at the age of 82 in his hometown of Warren, Ohio. Born on September 12, 1942, to William T. Custer and Elizabeth Kinel Custer, Raymond's life was one marked by dedication, service, and love of family.
After graduating from Braceville High School, Raymond honorably served his country in the Navy from 1960 to 1964. His time in the service instilled in him a sense of discipline and camaraderie that he carried throughout his life. Upon returning to civilian life, Raymond found his calling as a welder with ITT Grinnell. Later, he continued to serve his community as a custodian at Maplewood Career Center in Ravenna.
Raymond's life was a testament to the things he valued most: family, hard work, and the simple pleasures of life. He shared a loving marriage with his wife, Mary Jane O'Brien Custer, and together they raised two wonderful children, Kerry Jean and William Thomas. Raymond's role as a father was one he embraced wholeheartedly.
Raymond often sought the tranquility of the great outdoors. He was an avid hunter, a pastime that allowed him to enjoy nature with his father, son, and nephews. Raymond’s love for his hunting dogs was well-known; he found great joy in the companionship and lively energy of his beagles. His yard and garden were a source of pride and enjoyment.
Those who knew Raymond would describe him as a good friend and neighbor. Whether he was pitching in to help a neighbor with yard work or fixing a broken tractor, he was generous with his time and talents.
Raymond's legacy is carried on by his devoted wife, Mary Jane of Champion; his daughter, Kerry Jean of Champion; his son, William Thomas and daughter-in-law Ellen Buckley of Ellicott City, Maryland; his sister, Lorraine Mace of Warren, and the many friends and relatives who were fortunate enough to be a part of his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William T. and Elizabeth Kinel Custer.
Visitation will be at Borowski Memorial Home, Newton Falls, Ohio, on Friday, May 30, 2025 from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m., followed by military honors provided by the United State Navy and Newton Falls Veterans Honor Guard.
