Mildred Rood Obituary

Mildred Celeste Rood, 105, of Warren was called home to be with her Lord on Thursday, May 7, 2020.

Approaching her 106th birthday, Mildred was born on September 20, 1914 in Hiram, Ohio.  She was born the third of twelve children to Olen and Cora Mathias Shanower.  She was mentally alert and her physical well-being allowed her to remain in her own home which she shared with her daughter.  Mildred was blessed with longevity and experienced many events during the generations that she encountered.  She was inspired by her faith and loved her family and friends.

Mildred was a member of the First Church of God on Parkman Road in Warren.  She was a greeter at the church for 25 years and participated in other offices associated with the church.  In 2004, Mildred was honored as the first Mother of Year at First Church of God.

Although never taking formal music lessons, Mildred would be able to hear a song and then play it on the organ.  She enjoyed playing the organ along with singing gospel and western music. As a homemaker, Mildred loved to fish with her husband and bake for the family, with each family member having a personal memory to cherish.

She leaves behind her daughter, Wilma L. Antilia; her two sisters, Marjorie Harkness of Florida and Olive Werstler of Canton; her two brothers, Kenneth Shanower of Greentown and Corlin Shanower of Canton; her five grandchildren, Cora, Mark, Billie Jo, Melissa and Felix; her eight great grandchildren, Tierra, Jon Jeremy, Brandy Lynn, Teresa, Anita Rose, Andrea, Megan and Allison and her fifteen great great-grandchildren.

Mildred was preceded by her first husband, William D. White, the love of her life; her second husband, Eldon Rood; her son, Marlin D. White; her sisters, Florence Brogan, Ruby Pishney and Phyllis Bland and her brothers, Clarence, Bert, Harlen and Jack Shanower.

A family service will be held on Tuesday, May 12, 2020 at the Borowski Memorial Home in Newton Falls with the Pastor Jeff Duty officiating.

Interment will follow in the Newton Township Cemetery, where Mildred will be laid to rest next to her first husband, William.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that material tributes may be made in memory of Mildred to the First Church of God, 1951 Parkman Road, Warren, Ohio 44485.
