Charles Eugene Monroe, Sr.

Charles Eugene Monroe Sr., 73, of Braceville, Ohio, passed away peacefully at his home on July 30, 2026. He was born on February 5, 1953, in Harlan County, Kentucky, to Tom Monroe and Sarah Pauline (Click) Monroe.

Eugene was the beloved and devoted husband of Joanie Monroe. The two were married on August 6, 2000, and shared a loving life together. He was a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend.

Eugene retired from Roadway Express in October 2006 after an outstanding career as a professional truck driver. As a proud Million Mile Driver, he was respected for his dedication, professionalism, and commitment to safety.

He will always be remembered for his quick wit, infectious sense of humor, and love of dancing. His favorite song, “Should’ve Been a Cowboy,” could always get him on the dance floor. Eugene had a remarkable gift for making everyone feel welcome, and his playful personality ensured that no one was ever left out.

Family was the center of Eugene’s life. He loved unconditionally and treasured every moment spent with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. To them, he will forever be remembered as the world’s best “Pap.”

He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Sarah Pauline Monroe; his brother, James Monroe; and his sister, Bonnie O’Shields.

Eugene leaves behind his loving wife, Joanie Monroe; his children, Chuck (Angie) Monroe of Warren, Ohio; John (Jen) Monroe of Leavittsburg, Ohio; Connie (Art) Cogar of Garrettsville, Ohio; and Stacey (Dave) Wheeler of Garrettsville, Ohio. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren, Sean Monroe, Kaylub Fincham, Brenden Fincham, Olivia (Alex) Burrell, Alexia Rushnok, Garrett Cogar, Sophia (Sean) Cogar, Cara (Nick) Gibson, Ashley (Lucas) Monroe, Mathew (Delana) Monroe and Nathan Monroe. His legacy continues through his cherished great-grandchildren, Luke, Sadie, Stella, Briella, Damon, Payton and Harper.

Eugene is also survived by his siblings, Franklin Monroe of Hope Mills, North Carolina, Gracie Monroe of Freedom, Ohio, Darla Monroe Henley of Riceville, Tennessee, William Monroe of Loretto, Tennessee, Tammie Monroe (Frank Bayus) of Leavittsburg, Ohio, Hazel Monroe, and his sister-in-law, Gail Monroe of Newton Falls, Ohio.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Eugene’s life on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at Braceville United Methodist Church in Braceville, Ohio. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., with the funeral service beginning at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Drakesburg Cemetery. A Celebration of Life dinner will be held at Braceville Methodist Church following the burial.

Though he will be deeply missed, Eugene’s laughter, kindness, love for family, and unforgettable spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
