Anthony J. Shields

Anthony J. Shields, age 93, passed away on August 25, 2021. He was born February 14, 1928, in Newton Falls, Ohio, to Anthony and Helen (Sindledecker) Shields.

He was united in marriage to Irma Jean Gillespie on September 10, 1949.

Anthony (Tony) was a long-time resident of Austintown, Ohio. Anthony proudly served in the United States Navy during the end of WWII. After retiring from ITT Grinnel and Wean, he relocated with his wife to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and the past year has resided at Batavia, Illinois, with his daughter. 

He enjoyed life and stayed active fishing, golfing, playing poker, and running. He ran the Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Boston Marathons, completing the Boston Marathon in 3 hours and 16 minutes (7.29 minutes per mile) at the age of 62.

He is survived by his loving wife Irma, of 72 years, and his five children: David Shields (Bobbi), Vienna, OH, Susan Shields, Fort Lauderdale, FL, Greg Shields (Melody), Quakertown, PA, Lisa Saultz (Rich), Batavia, IL, A.J. Shields (Cindy), Canfield, OH, eleven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and one-half brother, Joe Frendak.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a sister and brother.

Private gravesite services will be held in Newton Falls, Ohio, at a later date.
